2022 in Review
The moments of ’22
For many of us, 2022 was shaped by both impactful events and a gradual return to pre-COVID normalcy. These are some of the big events that shaped the year.
Olympics
The Winter Olympics were held in Beijing in February. Six athletes from the Harvard community competed in the Games.
Russia-Ukraine war
In February, Russian forces invaded Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke live from Ukraine at a Harvard Kennedy School forum this fall.
Supreme Court
Ketanji Brown Jackson became the first Black woman to serve as a justice of the United States Supreme Court.
Inflation
Labor shortages, supply chain problems, and robust demand drove inflation to some of the highest rates in decades.
Protests in Iran
The death of Mahsa Amini catalyzed one of the largest and most sustained uprisings in Iran in a generation.
World Cup
The World Cup took place in Qatar, the first Arab country to host the quadrennial international soccer tournament.
The year at Harvard
We saw the return of beloved traditions, we launched new and exciting initiatives, and we welcomed new members to our community.
Hasty Pudding
Hasty Pudding Theatricals celebrated Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner as Man and Woman of the Year.
Match Day
On Match Day—when medical students learn where they'll serve residencies—students celebrated virtually and in person with their classmates, family, friends, faculty, and staff.

Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery
The Report of the Committee on Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery was released and the committee’s recommendations were accepted in full.
Arts First
Arts First returned as an in-person event for the first time in three years. The annual arts festival featured theater, dance, music, and spoken-word performances, along with interactive public art.
Commencement
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was the principle speaker at the first Harvard Yard Commencement since 2019.
Alumni Day
At the first-ever Harvard Alumni Day, two-term U.S. poet laureate and Pulitzer Prize–winner Tracy K. Smith delivered the keynote address.
Summer in the city
With public art, live music, and events in the Square, Harvard is a hub of activity in the summer.
Introducing Sasha
Sasha, a community engagement dog, was welcomed as a member of the Harvard Police Department this summer. The 2-year-old black Lab's job is to bring joy to those she meets on campus.
Move-in Day
Family and friends, joined by Harvard deans and faculty, helped first-year students in the Class of 2026 get settled into their new homes on campus.
The Salata Institute
The Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability's inaugural event, “The Future is Now: Harvard Takes on the Climate Challenge,” included panelists from across the University.
Fall colors
As the leaves begin to change, Harvard Yard and Tercentenary Theatre become a rainbow of colors.
Harvard vs. Yale
The Crimson welcomed the Yale Bulldogs to Harvard Stadium for the 138th playing of The Game, the first held at Harvard Stadium since 2019.
Royal visit
The Princess of Wales met with Harvard experts to discuss childhood development during her visit to Harvard's Center on the Developing Child.
President-elect Claudine Gay
On December 15, Claudine Gay was elected to become the 30th president of Harvard University.
