This year, over 200,000 Americans will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,000 will die of the disease. In our ongoing efforts to support cancer awareness, outreach, and activism, Harvard Cancer Society will be hosting Breast Cancer Awareness week from October 14-20. The highlights of this weeklong series of events and volunteer opportunities will include:
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, an annual American Cancer Society walk along the Charles River Esplanade to raise money for breast cancer research. The walk begins and ends at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell. Students and faculty are encouraged to join Team Harvard on the Strides website at www.cancer.org/stridesonline.
The event will be held on Sunday, October 14th. A speaking event featuring Hester Hill Schnipper, member of the Oncology Social Work Department at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and breast cancer survivor, on October 16th at 8 p.m. in Science Center C. “Phone a Friend” and other outreach activities that will occur daily outside the Science Center. A weeklong series in the dining halls on foods that help prevent cancer, co-sponsored by Harvard University Dining Services.
We hope you will consider joining us for these important events at our university. Harvard Cancer Society will also be accepting donations through the end of Breast Cancer Awareness week that will go directly to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest breast cancer organization.
