Dear Members of the Harvard Community,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Ichihashi Potts as Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church, effective July 1.
Matt studied English at the University of Notre Dame and received his MDiv from Harvard Divinity School, where he has been a member of the faculty since 2013. He holds a PhD in the Study of Religion from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard. A priest in the Episcopal Church and an affiliated minister in the Memorial Church, Matt is a gifted preacher who brings to the pulpit a deep appreciation and understanding of texts rooted in his own acclaimed academic work at the intersection of religion and literature. His incisive research and scholarly achievements are complemented by an extraordinary devotion to teaching, a commitment that has earned him the admiration and respect of students and colleagues across the University. For more about Matt—and his wife, Colette, and three young children—please see the Harvard Gazette announcement.
Nurturing the spiritual life of our community helps to ensure that everyone at Harvard can thrive, and I appreciate the thoughtful suggestions and observations offered by many of you over the course of the search. Matt is a person of remarkable integrity and insight, and we are all fortunate that he will use his considerable talents in service to our University. I am excited by the opportunity to work with and learn from such an inspiring individual. I hope you will join me in welcoming him to his new post at the heart of our campus.
All the best,
Larry
